Parent Montessori Resources

Why is it important for parents and guardians to understand the Montessori philosophy?

Knowing why something is offered, and understanding the intention behind a work plan, classroom material or design, or how a child is being guided is imperative to a successful Montessori school experience. Parents may feel puzzled about what students are doing in the classroom, particularly if they aren’t familiar with Montessori materials and philosophy. When parents educate themselves on the Montessori experience, it makes us a stronger community and allows teachers and guides to focus their energy on our children’s academic, social, and emotional development.

Below you will find two introductory videos for viewing: "inside Montessori Schools" and "Montessori: The Elementary Years". We recommend also reading the articles below, most of which were originally published in Montessori Life, the magazine of the American Montessori Society. Regardless of the publication date, each article is fresh and relevant to Montessori today.

For adding to your Montessori book list, the following titles are accessible, informative, and engaging: Marin Schmidt’s "Understanding Montessori: A Guide for Parents"; Paula Polk Lillard’s "Montessori, A Modern Approach"; and Aline Wolf’s "A Parents’ Guide to the Montessori Classroom and The World of the Child". Finally, if you would like to delve into a book by Dr. Montessori herself, "The Child in the Family" would be an ideal place to start.

The Parent’s Role

The Montessori approach to education is based on universal principles of human development that are essential to the work of Montessori teachers, and that are essential to parenting practices too. Building home environments that harmonize with your child’s Montessori class will support their education and development. Your task will be to study and understand, to observe your child at home and at school, to deepen your awareness of Montessori tenets, and to collaborate with your child’s teacher in his or her education.

Specific opportunities may include the following:

  • Parent-teacher conferences

  • Open houses

  • Read Maria Montessori’s books

  • Teacher guided discussion groups

The family has an amazing power. This is why parents and teachers need to study and reflect, to understand each other’s role, and to help one another help the child.
